Beast Mode!

I got up early today to get Rina ready for school and as soon as she got up, she came to our bedroom for a muscle flexing throwdown. That’s her new thing lately, she flexes and show me her big muscles. I think she puts as much tension in her face as she does in her biceps! It kills me every time!

So intense!

So intense… Beast Mode!

I cropped out the pic in order to avoid child nudity and what you can’t see in the background is my husband in bed, half awake with a look on his face that says “What the …”! also priceless!

We made it to the bus stop in time, but I swear, that bus gets there earlier and earlier everyday! I ran some quick errands and came back home to get ready for the WOD:

I warmed up and decided to try a TTB on the rig. Something magical happened! I managed one rep on my 1st attempt! After 2 years, I could finally √ that one off my goal list! I was so freaking happy, I may have done a cartwheel! I tried to get a second one and it didn’t happen, but still I was pumped!

Skill: (Widowmaker) Back Squat 1×20

I had been texting with Kathleen and she strongly recommended I used 85# for these, even though I was planning on using 78#. Whaddyaknow! Apparently, friends know me better than I know myself since it felt like I sandbagged it a little. I think I could have gone up to 87.5# or even 90#. The last 2 reps were a bit more of a struggle, but otherwise, it was good.

As for the WOD itself, it was a no score one, but I kept a tally of my reps & cals/rounds and here’s what I ended up scaling down to:

  • Ring rows: 8-7-7-9
  • walking lunges with KB (26#): 11-11-12-13
  • L-sits (instead of strict TTB): 7-8-8-8
  • Row (cals): 7-7-7-8
  • HSPU (from box): 7-8-8-4

On my last round of the HSPU, I didn’t position my hands properly and wasted a lot of time trying to get a rep in, to finally reposition my hands and get going. Oh well, I’ve been on a high ever since I’ve come back home. To look back and reminisce about how frustrated I was 2 years ago to not be able to roll my back on the foam roller because I had no abdominal strength whatsoever, to now finally getting my 1st TTB and doing L-sits is pretty amazing to me. I love how I keep getting stronger and fitter with time by doing Crossfit. I’m so glad I’ve finally found what works for me AND I love doing it and breaking my own limits day in and day out!

I came back home and did some housewifey stuff (food prep for the week, laundry, watched Frozen with Béa and sang the songs with her!, welcomed Rina back from the school bus, you know, the usual!)

Now, I plan on putting the hot water bottle on my back and trying to schedule a chiro appointment (my sciatic has been bugging me for a bit) and see if that could help!

Get Your Sweat On!

After yesterday’s workout at Kathleen’s, I felt super energized and ready to take on anything this morning. I was pleased when I saw this:

Skill: Back squat 3×10 E2M

I paired up with Telsey and Jen and truly didn’t know what to tackle for weight for these. I did 85#-90#-95#. The last round felt challenging, but I think I could have done 100#. Dang! Next time!

WOD: Escape the Trap

That was a fun team WOD and I remained paired up with Telsey and Jen. Because there were so many of us we had to start the WOD with the burpee BJ. I started our trio off by doing 8 true to form, then I did step-ups. At some point, I resorted to granny-style burpees, but picked it back up again. Second round was fairly similar, except we were taking a long time and Coach Caleb told us to go to the Trap DL part of the WOD after our second round and to come back to the burpee BJ afterwards if we still had time.

We were using 75# for the trap DL and that was way too light. I was even able to trot carrying the bar across the gym, so next time, I should go up to 85-90#. Once we were done with the Trap DL, Jen had to leave to get home in time for her hubby to get to work, and Telsey was getting close to her cutoff time as well so she did her 3rd round of burpee BJ and I took it upon myself to finish the last 30 reps (my 15 and Jen’s 15). It was slow, but I tried to keep things moving as best I could and we finished with a time of 23:06. I was pouring sweat from everywhere and even my hair was dripping.

Sweaty deer stuck in headlights. "What the heck just happened to me?!?"

Sweaty deer stuck in headlights. “What the heck just happened to me?!?”

I came back home and had an interesting text exchange with Kath about where I’m at as a Crossfitter.  I feel that even though I still scale pretty much every WOD, I’m definitely out of the “newbie” category, but I’m still worlds away from the true athletes. Which makes partnering with people difficult at times. I love hanging out with new people because I was just there not so long ago, so I understand the struggle. At the same time, I think sometimes it would be worth it to challenge myself and team up with people I consider “beasts”. At the same time, I also would feel very bad if I slowed them down.

The mental struggle is real, I tell ya!

Once I had showered and refuelled with breakfast, I realized I had forgotten to clean the inside of my freezer and fridge last week, during the Deep House Cleaning, so I got right on that. Then, our tenants finally moved out and it was time to start cleaning the suite after they left. We still have a little bit to do tomorrow morning before the new tenants move in, but overall it went well. Except when I broke the telescopic mop. I was vigorously cleaning the ceilings (I was also amazed at how people can get ceilings so dirty, but I digress) and the silly thing broke in two.

I broke that thing like a twig!

I broke that thing like a twig!

I had no time to fiddle with that kind of crap, so I took my step-stool (midgets unite!) and got scrubbing with the old rag-and-cleaner method! 6hrs later, we have the bathroom left, vacuuming and mopping the kitchen floor as well as priming the holes that have been patched and painting the walls.

Yeah, not how I had anticipated my day or my last week off before heading back into work. Hopefully, I can still manage to book myself a massage. I’m pretty sure if Crossfit came out with a WOD involving having to wash walls, windows and vacuum, I would RX the crap out of that! Ugh! One last cleaning boom to do tomorrow and then I should be done for at least 24hrs!

Yeah right, one can only wish!

PR Day And A Date Night

I had a hard time falling asleep last night after I saw which WOD was awaiting for us in the morning. I was wondering how I should tackle it and was anxious to see if I had gotten any stronger at it. I woke up before my alarm went off and it’s a good thing too because I had forgotten to turn it on!

During my own warm-up, I tried to do TTB on my own, but they still elude me. I really wanted to try them on the rings, but I couldn’t reach any of the rings and it would have taken me too long to set them up for my height. Better luck next time! Here’s what we did:

Skill: Back Squat 5×5 E2M

If you remember, we have done these just last week, but the interval was E90S. I don’t know if it was the longer rest period, but I felt much better doing them today. I even managed a new PR at 110#. I was pacing myself better and even though the last set was hard, I didn’t feel like I was going to pass out like I did last week!  Below are my reps:

90#-95#-100#-105#-110#

WOD: Jackie

The last time I tackled this one was back in February 2014 and I had finished in 13:10 with the following scaling:

  • 1000m row
  • 50 thrusters at 35#
  • 30 pull-ups with red and blue bands

Here’s what I did today:

  • 1000m row
  • 50 thrusters at 45#
  • 30 pull-ups with red and purple bands

We had to have 3 heats for this one because we are limited to 6 ergs and I chose to go in the 3rd heat since I’m so fast on the erg (NOT!)

I was actually impressed with my time on the erg. I finished the 1000m in 4:49 which is pretty good for me considering my very recent 1000m PR was 4:29.0 just earlier this week. I was just trying to keep my pace between 2:25-2:30/500m. Not surprisingly, I was the last one to get off the erg and move onto the thrusters. I felt good doing these and I tried my best to break them into sets of 5, rest the bar on my hips or on my back, then go for 5 more, but more often than not, my second set of 5 had to be broken down into 3 & 2 and then I would drop the bar on the floor.

Then it was on to the rig for the pull-ups. When I first got on the rig, I did 5, then 4 and then kept my sets at 3 reps. It took me a while, but I finished in 14:31 and even though I took longer, it’s a new PR for me since I increased the bar weight to Rx and decreased the resistance in the bands I used. Karen was a huge motivator and she was even holding the block of chalk up for me so I wouldn’t have to get off my box to chalk up (Thanks so much Karen, it saved me some precious seconds!) and Linda was cheering me on. When I was done, Linda said I looked really strong on the pull-ups and I probably could have gone even lower with the bands. I guess I’ll have to try next time! 😉

Now, I’m off to get my hair cut and then, the hubster and I have a date tonight! It feels like it’s been months since we’ve spent some alone time together and I’m very much looking forward to a nice, hot, uninterrupted meal with my love followed by some strolling around downtown! 🙂

Seeing Stars

I really didn’t want to go to Crossfit last night when I went to bed and even though I really wasn’t in the mood, I took my clothes out and put them at the ready in the bathroom for this morning. I’ve had a cold all week and had a crappy sleep last night with my night ending at 0400. I was more than ready to come out of bed at 0500.

Here’s what I was anticipating:

Skill: Back Squats 5×5 E90S

I was actually looking forward to these last night and I kept it with a minimal PR goal of 5#. My previous attempt at theses ended up at 100# and I was planning to end at 105#. I secretly wished I could have done 110#, but my energy level was too low today. On the 4th rep of the last round (my round at 100#), when I came out of the squat, I was seeing stars and black spots in front of my eyes and said so outloud. Coach Caleb came by and spotted me on the last rep and I really had to fight for it, but I managed to do it without being rescued out of it. Yeah, glad I stuck to 105# today!

WOD: Blower

We had to have 3 heats for this one since there were so many of us and only 6 ergs. I was lucky enough to be in the first heat. I knew I would struggle through this one with my lungs not being 100% from my cold, but at the same time, my goal was just to get moving today. I finished with a score of 695 (3 full rounds + 65m rowed into the 4th round) and even though it’s a low score, I’m glad I managed to even get that much! I was happy and out of breath when it was all said and done and I went on to cheer my peers in the other heats.

I came back home, walked the dog up to the reservoir and tried to jog back down with him on his leash. I’m slowly trying to teach him to run on his leash as all he wants to do when we’re jogging is jump and bite my hands. It’s a slow process and the entire thing probably lasted less than 10 minutes (don’t worry, I know I’m not supposed to be running a puppy, I’m just trying to slowly bring him to good manners on his leash) and we managed to shave about 5 minutes to our walk time. Next time, maybe I’ll try to “run” up the reservoir as well (he’ll do just fine walking next to me as I slowly and painfully huff and puff my way uphill 😉 ).

I came back home, made a delicious breakfast of gluten-free toast layered with hummus, salsa and a sunny-side-up egg, a side of sausages and cherry tomatoes and a nice coffee. Don’t diss the toast until you try it, it is absolutely delicious and my favourite breakfast at home! Ben took both girls with him when he drove Rina to school and extended his outing by getting a haircut, which meant I had an empty house to myself to clean. I can stay focused on the task way better when the girls are not calling out for me every 5 minutes and that meant that I had dusted, vacuumed, mopped the upstairs, cleaned the downstairs bathroom and finished off 3 loads of laundry (folded and put away too!) by 1115! I had a few minutes to play with Béa before heading out to pick up Rina at preschool. We came back home, had lunch, they watched a bit of TV and they are now down for nap/quiet time while I finish this post and will then relax with some knitting. Nanny will show up later so I can also nap before my night at work. The glamorous life of a full-time working mom/RN!

New Year’s Eve!

I was dog tired last night. So much so that I think I fell asleep on the couch around 2000, woke up around 2200 only to drag my butt upstairs and crash into bed. On cue, I was awake, yet again, at 0400. I tried in vain to fall back asleep, but in the end, I got up and got ready for the WOD.

Another "different" wod - combine all the reps from each of the exercises to get your total score!  You may start at different stations than is listed below if the class is large. Enjoy!!

Part 1:  3 minutes of Back Squats @ 105/155 - please be safe with this, know how to escape if you need to and break the 3 minutes into sets!
Rest 3 min
Part 2:  3 minutes of 2 wall walks (controlled descent), 8 ttb
Rest 3 min
Part 3:  3 minutes of rope climbs
Rest 3 min
Part 4:  3 minutes of Taters (35/53)

TG:  2 min at each station, rest remainder of time.  Scale all weights as needed, lying rope climbs
FG:  scale bar weight to 65/95, taters to 26/44, lying rope climbs

FG2: scale bar weight to 85/115

I was happy we managed to beg for get a 0600 class coached by Caileigh. I had a ton of housecleaning to do and having to go at 0930 would have dragged on the cleaning until much later in the day (I really despise cleaning the house). For the WODs, I did a mix of FG+ with some Rx. Here’s what I did

Part 1: I did all the back squats Rx at 105#. I managed 23 reps in the 3 minutes allowed and I realized only after I was done that I should have worn my lifting shoes for this one. Oh well…

Part 2: I did this one FG since I can’t do a TTB. I did knees to elbows and managed 21 reps for this one.

Part 3: I did all my reps as lying rope climbs and managed 11 reps. Those were very unpleasant and I need to work on my rope climbs in the coming year (amongst other things).

Part 4: I did all my taters at 35# and even managed the proper swing of the KB. No more modifying swing for this Mama! I managed 28 reps of these.

Grand total score of 83. Meh! I wasn’t very pleased with my score, but it’s still much better than if I had stayed in bed this morning! 😉

I came back home, made breakfast and tackled the cleaning. I was lucky to have some tremendous helpers (Ben) and some, not so tremendous ones (Rina and Béatrice). It took us a good 3hrs to get the house completely clean and I am now waiting to fold the last load of laundry. I am pooped and will wish you all a very Happy New Year right now, because chances are, I’ll be drooling on the couch again at 2000 tonight! Be safe if you party it up!

New Traditions

We celebrated Christmas yesterday morning by having breakfast with my in-laws (eggs, sausages and coffee) and then, we all sat in the living room and opened up presents. I have to admit I had so much fun watching the girls opening up their presents. There truly is something magical about re-discovering Christmas though the eyes of a child. I was just as happy as Rina when she opened up the box containing her purple unicorn and to see Béatrice kissing her own pink unicorn was priceless:

Full of love!

After the gift opening, we took everyone for a walk to the closest playground for some fun in the chilly Christmas day:

I would have posted some pics of Rina, but she was making a grumpy face on all the shots I took of her yesterday 😦

We were also able to live some of the Christmas magic as I was able to convince Ben to go walk downtown Victoria to go see the Christmas lights in action at the Parliament. You see, my wonderful husband doesn’t like it when we do non-physical family activities, so I had a bit of convincing to do, but with the help of my in-laws, we all packed up in two cars and headed downtown. It was perfect! Seeing as it was December 25 and around 4-5pm, there was barely anybody in the streets, making it easy to find parking and take wonderful pictures of the deserted streets. Below are some of my favourite shots I took:

This morning, I was able to lounge in bed for a bit before I had a hearty breakfast and headed out for the Box for this:

Skills: Back Squat 6×3 E2M

I paired up with Tracey for these. My last PR for these were at 110#. I was going for 115#, but my math being what it is, I ended up my 6th round at 120# and even though my last rep was hard and I struggled to come out from the bottom, I managed to do it! Yay! A 10# PR on a 3-rep isn’t too shabby! The amazing Tracey managed 150#!!! I was in awe! She made it look easy too! Something to aspire to, fo’ sho’!

WOD: Baseline

This one is a basic one for our Box. I had first done it at the beginning of my On-Ramp program and finished in 7:55, using the black (widest) band and doing knee push-ups. The last time I did it was at the end of my On-Ramp program and I had done it in 6:55, using the black band and doing my HRPU from my knees. We had to separate into two heats today and I was part of the second one. I took two short breaks during the air squats (one after 10 reps, just to catch my breath, the other after 25 reps, to stretch my hip flexors a bit) and managed to do all the sit-ups unbroken. I was struggling through the push-ups, but I managed to do them all full HRPU, no knee push-ups for me, no siree! 😉 I then moved onto the pull-ups and they were hard. I broke them into 3-3-2-2. I finished in 7:35. Smack between my 2 previous times, but really, this was a PR for me as well, considering I did all my HRPU Rx and used way smaller bands for my pull-ups! A good day of hard work! 🙂 When the girls wake up from their nap, we will be going out to buy our new sectional for our living room! I’m so thrilled to say that I will finally be rid of our futon! It has served us well over the years, but at 36-years-old, I am ready for a REAL couch in my life! 🙂

I hope you all have a wonderful Holiday season! Mine just keeps getting better and better!

Did Not Finish

s Screen Shot 2014-10-24 at 9.09.27 AM

Not because I gave up, but because I pinched a nerve in my neck or something and developed a splitting headache from the back of my left eye, all the way down my left shoulder. Let me explain…

I was looking forward to taking a break from the MFFL and rejoining my usual 0600 class. Ben will be leaving later today for the weekend and I was very much looking for some leisure “me” time at the Box. Funny how I just described a WOD as leisure! Ha!

I felt a bit sluggish, but not anymore than I usually am at the 0600 class! I mean, I did wake up at 0500 for 3 days in a row, but such is my life and I’m used to it by now. The warm-up was nice, especially the eagle dislocate. It offered a nice stretch in the elbows and forearms. Plus, Marika and I were letting out little “ga-kaw!” just for fun!

Skill: Kipping pull-ups

Things got sketchier there. I don’t know if I should have used bigger bands (I used red and purple), but I couldn’t just get the swing without any bands and I couldn’t kip either with the bands. I feel like I’m regressing on the kipping pull-ups and it’s not a nice feeling.

WOD: Khalipa Smash

I wanted to do this one at 55# with the 5 DUs and 40 singles. I started my 1st round and everything was going somewhat decent. I managed to get 4 back squats and then I started having a sharp pain bend my left eye. I took a break, with the bar on my back and a few breaths, did 2 more, took another break and finished my last 2 reps. I managed to do my 5 DUs and then my 40 singles, but I knew something was wrong. I tried stretching my neck as the pain behind my eye was now radiating down my left shoulder, but I just couldn’t shake it off. Coach Caleb came by, we talked it out and decided I shouldn’t push it any further. I started crying. That’s right, big sobs too. Not so much because of the pain, but Crossfit is MY time and that’s the only time I have to myself where I can do something I love uninterrupted. And now, I wouldn’t even be able to do that today because of a stupid tension migraine. I was not happy. I went and tried to roll my neck with a Lacrosse ball, iced it up while people were finishing up the WOD, but the headache was going nowhere. I went to the white board and wrote a big fat DNF next to my name.

I came back home and was still sniffling and frustrated about the whole thing. I still have a headache event though I took 2x extra strength acetaminophen and 2x extra strength ibuprofen. I didn’t snap a muscle or anything, I think it might just be a pinched or exacerbated nerve in the neck. The pain in my neck is almost all gone, but the headache behind the left eye is persisting. I guess this body of mine is trying to tell me to take it easy for the next few days and just enjoy my time at home with the girls while Ben is away. I plan on doing just that, so I can go back on Monday and work my butt off!
