3 Little Steps

Im back!

We had a lovely week in Cuba, filled with fun family times, sun and ocean! I will do a photo recap a little later, but for now, it was back to business as usual this morning for a challenging WOD:

WOD: Six by Five

I was really hoping to do this one Rx and it was close, but my little noodle arms couldn’t do the KB push press at 35#, so I settled for FG with the following modifications:

6 RFT of:

  • 400m run
  • 15 AKBS @ 35#
  • 10 reverse KB lunges @ 35#
  • 5 KB push press @ 26#

I was expecting this to hurt bad after my week of lounging on the beach (I did only 1 WOD I made up while in Cuba, more on this in my Cuba recap post) and I was right. Rounds 1 through 3 went fairly well. I was slow compared to others, but I didn’t let it affect me. I kept up with my inner positive dialogue of “just one more rep, one more step”. It worked until round 4. When I first took off on the run, I stopped and took 3 walking steps. I don’t know why I did that, obviously, 3 steps is nothing and it was only a mental block I had to get through as those 3 little steps really didn’t offer any rest. I picked it up again and managed to not stop for the remainder of the runs. When I came back in from my 4th run, that KB was playing mind tricks on me. I did not want to pick it up again. I took a much longer rest, and finally, I won over my head and got back to work. I typically broke my AKBS in sets of 9-6 0r 10-5, lunges were broken into 5-5 and push press were done without rest.

Round 5 went a little smoother than round 4 and I tried to “recover” on the runs, taking advantage of the downhills and picking up the speed. Round 6 destroyed me. I did NOT want to go back out and run again, let alone, do another round of this. Tracey and David came out to run with me and, although I didn’t want to disappoint them, I also didn’t want to push anymore. I was crying with exhaustion and I’m pretty sure I looked somewhat like Kara Webb during Murph at the Games this year. Although, to Webb’s credit, she probably still looked better than I did! I came back in and picked up the KB right away, I knew that if I hesitated, there was no way I would pick it up later so I just went straight to work with it. I finished my last rep at 34:14 and I was so freakin’ happy with that time.

Even though I finished almost last, I knew I had accomplished so much in those 34 minutes. I used to “run” 3km in 30 minutes before I had kids. Today, I ran 2.4km in 34:14, but I also knocked down some serious work as well, so to me, this is great. It’s a true testament of my fitness and where I’m at right now. I can honestly say, even though I don’t look my fittest (heck, I’ll never have my 18 year-old body with a 6-pack ever again), I’m probably in the best shape of my life and that means everything to me. I was elated when I made that realization and I couldn’t stop the happy tears from flowing. Onwards and Upwards my friends!

It’s been a busy week and I’ll try to recap quickly.

Last Monday was a Civic Holiday here and we enjoyed the day at the beach with Ben’s mom who was visiting from Kingston. We hiked to Mystic Beach and had fun in the sun and sand before we headed out for the typical lunch at Mom’s Café.

I had only 2 days at work before I was officially on vacation and although I was counting the hours on Wednesday. Let’s be real though, I kind of clocked out mentally around 1500, even though I was working until 1930. Nothing fazed me on that day and I was happy and lighthearted to make my way to my car at the end of the day! Off for a full month and I was more than ready for some time off. I already had 2 overtime calls to come in to work tonight so far… Not gonna happen!

I’ve spent yesterday and today getting some last minute shopping and making packing lists, getting everything organized and packed for our Cuban vacation! I can now say we are 98% ready to go, with little adjustments left to be done for our carry-on luggages.

I went to the Oly class yesterday morning and I was stoked to see Ryan show up: I wasn’t absolutely certain if there actually was a class or not and I was starting to think I’d gotten up at 0500 for nothing! Here’s what we did:

High hang, low hang, full squat snatch x6 E3M

Lots of rest for these and we were to work up to 75% of our 1RM. Mine was supposed to be 48.75#, but the closest I could get to was 48.5# (not enough small plates to make it a real 75%, but close enough). I was struggling on some reps and had to repeat a few, but as I warmed up, it felt smoother towards the end.

Squat Clean, Front Squat, Split jerk x6 E3M

Again, we were supposed to only go up to 75% of our 1RM so I used 67.5# for all my reps. The split jerk was unstable at times, but I managed all my reps. I was exhausted by the end! So much rest and yet, I was done for!

This morning, I woke up at 0500 again and I was still tired. I’ve been going to bed a little later than usual and I could definitely feel it this morning:

I had misread the WOD last night and thought it was only 1 round. Gulp! There was no way I could do this RX seeing as my 1RM DL is 160# and my 1RM clean is 90#. That would have been cutting it too close to exhaustion and Coach Caleb wanted us to do close to 30 reps/30 secs. Sometimes, the guy cracks me up! 😉 No way I was going to achieve that either, but I was happy that I managed some pretty stable rep scheme throughout all rounds. I did FG with the following reps:

DL @ 115#:8-8-9-8-8

Front squats @ 65#: 9-9-9-8-8

DUs:5-7-8-11-12

Sometimes, I look at my reps and feel a bit discouraged at how low they are. Then, I analyze them in a different way and I’m pretty happy with my work. For example, my reps are low on the DL, but if you tally it all, it comes up to 4715 lbs moved in 2:30. For the front squats, it comes up to 2797 lbs squatted in the same amount of time.  As for my DUs, I only managed to string 8 in a row (last round), but they felt smoother with each rounds. Funny how I can do those better when I’m more physically tired. Maybe it’s because I’m not as tensed up?

I’m ready to put a hot pack on my shoulders and real for the evening before yet another busy day tomorrow!

A Fun-Filled Day in Pictures

This post is picture heavy, you’ve been warned…

After I came back home from Crossfit Qualicum Beach (you can read all about that here), I had a quick breakfast and since the sun decided to make an appearance so we jumped on the occasion and made our way down to the beach with our sand pails and shovels and a skittish Rina who wasn’t enthused at all at the amount of small crabs on the beach. The tide was on its way out which meant we had about 2 km of sandbar to play with.

We came back to the condo once the clouds reappeared (it got chilly fast) for a quick lunch and finishing up a load of laundry. Ben had found a flyer at the laundromat about a place in Nanaimo called Jumping Jiminy’s. It’s an indoor playground centre. We decided to forgo the girls’ nap this afternoon to take them there. That place was the absolute bomb! I’m not sure who got the most fun out of that place, the little people or the big people enjoying supervising the whole thing! There are many huge infrastructures to climb, obstacles to avoid and crawl through and many big and fast slides. Ben and I had just as much fun getting the girls through the obstacle course as I’m sure they had.

I know this is extra blurry, but look at how much fun Daddy is having!

Ben referred to the place as the American Ninja Warrior parcour for kids. We all had so much fun and after an hour and a half, the grown ups were getting tired and sweaty. We had to bribe the girls with ice cream in order to leave the place and even with that, Rina was in tears and didn’t want to go 😦

Once we were done at the mandatory DQ pit stop, we decided to do some shopping in Nanaimo. We went to Country Club Centre where Ben was looking for a baseball hat to cover his noggin from the sun. He found one that was quite fetching in my opinion:

We went to Home Depot (of course! Now that we’re home owners, that’s our new hangout spot with Costco! 😉 ) where I bought the Better Living Foam Dispenser.

Lucas had that soap pump at CFQC this morning. I asked him where he had gotten it from and I bought 3 for the house (kitchen and both bathrooms). I had been looking for something similar for a while and I’m glad I found them for such a great price (about $16 each). After much discussion, Ben decided to purchase a new shower head (I don’t think it will get the suds out of my hair very well, but we’ll see… I have a thick head of hair and I’m picky about my shower heads). After all that fun grown-up time, we headed back to the condo to enjoy the pool and hot tub with the girls before dinner. All I have to say is that by 1730, I was ready to call it a day. I had been up for 12 hrs at that point and I was getting hungry. We packed the girls up and headed back for dinner where Béa thought this was proper table manners:

Baby feet for dinner it is!

We crammed a lot into today and we have another busy day tomorrow, a friend of ours is getting married! Let’s just hope the girls are on their best behaviour! As for Saturday, we are planning to take the girls to the Sand Sculpting Competition and we will also attempt mini golf with them! I will finish with 2 pictures I took yesterday evening:

Vacation!!!

Sweet Rina,

We are officially on our little hiking getaway and I cannot tell you how excited/happy that makes me. We left home yesterday under a lot of rain (of course it’s raining, we’re on vacation!!!) and slowly made our way to a lovely and quiet B&B called the Miracle Beach Inn (between Comox and Campbell River I think???) where we are staying in the Bear’s Den. It’s a lovely suite with a full kitchen, 2 bedrooms a small living room with wood burning fireplace and bathroom. Although the bathroom doesn’t have a tub so you are bathing in the kitchen sink for the week! 😉 The B&B is also fully equipped with a tennis court, a swimming pool, BBQ, and hot tub. They even have an old german shepherd who you coo to whenever you see him! His name is Hudson and he is 13 years old. Quite the old man, I tell you! I’ll be sure to post pictures of the B&B and Hudson later on!

About 30mins after we left home, we realized we had forgotten the wonderful home-cooked lasagna I had done the previous day at home 😦 Oh well, at least, it’s in the fridge and will still be edible for us when we get back (hopefully). On the way to the Miracle Beach Inn, we stopped at Rathrevor Beach Park in Parksville to visit Mike, Paula, Graham and Janel. They are camping with their trailer in the campground and I must say, it is a really nice campground. I wouldn’t mind trying to camp there once we have a bigger tent and a sleeping bag for you. The campground is really well-kept, the lots are nice and big and distant from one another and it is close to the beach with a nice playground for when you’re a little bit older!

On the menu today, we plan on going to explore Elk Falls Park. It should be a fairly easy and flat trail today and hopefully we can go explore Saratoga Beach when we get back to the B&B. We’ll also need to plan what we’ll be chowing down on for dinner. Once you are in bed, we’ll probably go relax in the hot tub as we can easily hear you if we have your bedroom window open. 😉 You see, we are living the life!

You passed and I caved…

Sweet Rina,

We had our last swimming lesson on Friday and at the end of the lesson, we got to enjoy the wave pool. You weren’t to impressed at the beginning, but did well overall and we managed to dunk you under water 3 times without too much fuss coming from you, which to me, is pretty successful! I plan on keeping up with going to the pool once or twice a week to keep you used to the water as we can only enroll you to your next class when you turn 1-year-old.

We came back home and I managed to catch a small cat nap while you slept, but I still couldn’t get my energy back up. I had been low on energy for a few days and I probably knew what the culprit was (low iron levels due to unusually long feminine situation) and I had been craving meat for 3 days, so I decided to cave in and listen to my body… Next time, I’ll just have an extra cup of coffee instead. After 3 months of being vegan, the tummy did not appreciate this assault! Your Dad could hear my gurgles all night and it made me feel like crap. I guess I’ve learned my lesson!

In completely other news, your Dad and I have been trying to see where we could go away on vacation at the end of August (I know we are making plans really late, but eh, that’s how we roll). Seeing as we are having really crappy weather, we were looking into going someplace sandy and beachy and sunny, but everything is slightly out of our budget so we are looking into other options. Some including going to visit our families back east (although that would be pretty pricey too and maybe not so relaxing) and going hiking up island. What do you think? Any suggestions?

Love,

Mom & Dad Xxo
