Their Balls Are Bigger Than Ours…

…wallballs that is!

I got to sleep in this morning because I was meeting up with Krista to go throw down at Keating Crossfit. Since she is working a night shift tonight, she wanted to do a later class so we decided upon the 0730 class. I was there early and warmed up a bit on my own before Krista arrived. I signed up the waiver and then we did a general warm-up. Once we were warmed, Coach Brent said he was ready when I was. I tried a few wallballs with their balls because I had never used balls like these before to do wall balls. They use the “wall ball” whether we use something more similar to a medicine ball. Here’s the difference:

Med ball

Med ball

Wall ball

Wall ball

I have to say, the wall ball is a lot more forgiving when you smack it on your chest. I can’t say for sure how it feels like when you smash your face with it because I managed to avoid doing that today. Maybe it felt more forgiving because it was 10# instead of the 14# I’m now used to using, but I still needed to get used to it. Once I did a few reps, I felt like I was good to go. I had brought my own rope so I knew I was good in that department as well. There was no way I was going to even attempt Rx, so Scaled division was what I was aiming for. My goal was to finish two rounds.

I got started on the wall balls. I managed 8, then I tried for 7, but decided on breaking my rounds into 5 reps, as much as I could. My technique wasn’t the greatest and I kept catching the ball, stopping, then dropping into the squat. That was a poor strategy and I wasted a lot of energy doing that. I got my 50 reps in and moved onto the 200 single skips. I was trying my best to get to 100, then rest, then do 100 again. I managed pretty close to that, with only a few tripping in my own feet.

Back to the wallballs. I broke all my reps into 5’s again and this time around, I was much more efficient at catching the ball into a squat. I got a few no-reps, but I just kept pushing through.

Back to the single skips. I was trying to speed up a bit, but it only made me trip on my feet more frequently so I slowed down my pace for more accurate reps.

I got back to the wallballs and managed 12 more reps before time was called.

Total reps: 512 (2 full rounds + 12 wallballs) Goal surpassed!

For once, I kind of felt good doing wallballs today. Don’t get me wrong, they are still my most disliked move so far, but I didn’t feel too defeated doing them. Must have been because of the lighter weight!

Wallballs: short people's nemesis!

Then it was time for Krista aka Power House aka Little K. That girl is a machine. She does triathlons and I knew she had the lungs for this one and I was sure she would beat my score easily. She totally did too! Here she is in action:

She did amazing with a score of 535!

Once we were done, we cooled down and discussed wallball technique (I gave her a few tips) and worked on our kip for the pull ups. It was nice because I usually don’t have time to stay behind and work on anything once I’m done, I usually have to rush home to Ben and the girls. I also gave her some pointers for her DUs and she worked on that for a little bit. Now that she knows my tricks, Krista has texted me that she may attempt 15.3 again on Monday. I won’t

I swung by the grocery store to get what I was missing to make these Crab Cakes and this Zucchini Chocolate Bread, had a quick shower and made myself a hearty breakfast! Now that I’m done with this post, I will get my cooking going! Keeping in mind with the secret I mentioned yesterday, we have a fun afternoon planned and, hopefully, I will be able to divulge my little secret antic back here soon! In the meantime, I hope you enjoy your weekend, I get to spend mine with my husband and my kids, a rare event lately!

Tough Times

This past month has been tough. Rina is definitely acting up with the fact that Ben and I are back to work full-time and Béatrice, being the little monkey-see-monkey-do that she is, copies her big sister all the time. When Rina has a meltdown, Béa has one just to be like her big sister. I’m not lying. Sometimes, she whines just because Rina is whining. It makes for a very loud household and it doesn’t get any better when I lose my patience and get loud on top of them.

I’m a loner. I like my quiet time. I need some “me time” where I can recharge in the peace and quiet of my house. I like my house clean (well, as clean and orderly as it can get with two children and a husband who isn’t so bothered by messiness). I can’t sit and relax until the house is somewhat orderly.

When I have to go to work, I need my scrubs out, my lunch and dinner packed the night before in order to optimize my sleeping time. Heck, I even fill my bottle of water and put it in the fridge overnight so I don’t have to do it in the morning. That’s how organized I am.

Rina has been a wonderful toddler up until very recently. She is now acting up a lot more, talking back and kicking and screaming. I can tell my “time-out” method isn’t going to last for much longer and I’m not sure what kind of discipline I’ll use when it doesn’t. I’ll admit to resorting to screaming a lot more than I would like to lately and I’m absolutely exhausted. Exhausted because the screaming isn’t helping, it only adds up to my frustration and exhausted because that’s not the kind of parenting I want to be doing.

I spoke to Mamie today and she reassured me that it is normal to have phases when you get more tired as a parent. I find it hard when Rina keeps behaving badly (and Béatrice imitates her) and it makes me not like motherhood at times. I don’t mean that I don’t like my daughters, quite the contrary. I live and breathe for these two little persons, but sometimes, I really don’t like being a mom. The kind of mom that has to choose between discipline and teaching the rules or giving up on your child. The mom who has to make a choice between folding laundry and cleaning the house or going to the playground. The mom who caves in and feeds “fishy crackers” and “bunny noodles” once in a while so that we don’t have to fight over mealtime.

Then, there’s the guilt. I know I need time to myself, but I feel guilty when I do take the time I need by myself. It’s never ending. You’re damned if you do and you’re damned if you don’t. One thing I won’t budge on though is Crossfit. I need Crossfit as an outlet where I can be “me” for an hour a few times a week. When I’m at Crossfit, I’m not Mommy, I’m just another woman, giving the best she has to the bar, the Erg, the Airdyne or the rig. To be completely honest, that’s one of the reason I love Crossfit so much: it’s a great outlet to my everyday life frustrations and I absolutely CANNOT think about anything else than what is going on in that very second, otherwise, injury would ensue, I’m absolutely convinced of that.

So, this morning, I was selfish and I went to the box. For my physical, mental and emotional health, as well as the eel–being of my daughters! 😉

Warm-up: That was the best warm-up ever, running, but with walking intervals. My kind of running!

Skill: Back squat 6×3 E2M

I was all excited about back squats! I teamed up with Jen and Victoria and we increased with similar weight throughout the progression. Here were my reps:

  • 90#-95#-100#-100#-105#-105#

I repeated the 100# twice because I couldn’t keep my shoulders up on the up part of the squat. I also repeated the 105# twice because my last rep at 105# was ugly. I couldn’t engage my core enough to make it straight on the up for the last rep of either set at 105#. It’s ok, I have 6 weeks to work on that until we move onto the next phase of training. Reading the blog, I was happy to find out we will be working on the snatch, the back squat and the handstand pushup over the next 6 weeks. I’m particularly happy about the HSPU as it’s something I’ve been curious of trying. Let’s just hope I don’t miss too many HSPU days because of my work schedule! 😉

WOD: Labour Daze

I paired up with Victoria and Jen again for this one and although it wasn’t easy, we did well. We did the FG and my modifications were mainly for the strict pull-ups (I used the blue and red bands) and stuck to the 14# wallballs. I started on the rower and lost track of my personal scores. I think I averaged 10-12 calories/minute on the Erg, 6-8 wall balls/minute (i know it’s low, but I’m still new to the 14# wallballs and they were a killer after rowing) and between 6-8 pull-ups/minute. I was sweaty after this one and although it seemed like a good idea to get moving after my little at-home WOd from Saturday, it made my legs really sore! Can’t wait to see how I’ll be walking tomorrow… Not!

Still playing with my macronutrients and learning about eating within my macros over the next week, but I can feel things are slowly clicking. I’m a slow learning, what can I say! 🙂

Balls In My Face!

My lovely friend Jenn says that ALL. THE. TIME! Instead of dropping the F-bomb, she says: “Balls in my face!” and it makes me laugh every time she says it!

Last night, I kept doing this:

1467403_394075140722668_317898219_nThat is, until I finally gave up at 2230 and went to bed. I just wanted to know if I needed knee-high socks or not (I put my clothes out in the bathroom the night before Crossfit so I don’t wake up Ben looking for my clothes in the dark). I decided to take the knee-high socks out just in case and went to bed.

I woke up this morning and I totally felt like this:

1467299_398197946977054_1388428486_n

Can totally relate as I’m still sore from Monday’s WOD!

Then, I checked the Box’s blog and this is what I saw:

WHAT? More wall balls? Balls to my face is right in this instance! Bleh! We had wall balls on Monday and there they were again in the WOD today. 😦 In case you didn’t notice, wall balls and I are enemies frennemies. I know they are good for me, but I’m really not a fan of them!

I did PR on my press with 60# though! 🙂 Here are my sets

  1. 5×50# (I forgot it was only 3 reps for each sets and did 5. Oops!)
  2. 3×55#
  3. 3×60#
  4. failed on my 1st attempt at 65#, failed on 2nd rep at 60#
  5. 2×60#, failed on third attempt

It wasn’t great, but I went from a previous 45# up to 60#, so I’m happy with that.

We had done The Incredibles back in August. You can read all about my scaling back then here.

Today, I decided to do it as follows:

FG: 3 rounds of:

  • 600m run
  • 15×10# wall balls (in my face!)
  • 10×20″ box jumps
  • 5 burpees

I finished with a time of 20:48 and although it was a lot more than my previous attempt at this WOD, I still consider this a PR because I actually ran the 600m. I took short walking breaks in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, I broke down my wall balls into sets of 5 and managed everything else unbroken. My goal today was to just finish, and I didn’t feel happy when I was done. I did a lot of negative self-talk during the running parts and I think that’s why I wasn’t happy when I was done, even though I have done really well (for me, anyway). No more negative self-talk when running! Something else to work on! 😉

Whirlwind!

The past 3 days have been insanely busy!

After Crossfit last Friday, Ben took the girls to Costco while I went to buy Rina’s last birthday present. I took the opportunity of being by myself at the mall to browse for clothes, thinking if I could find a cute little Christmas outfit, I would buy it. Well, I did! I found a cute little knit dress and a wonderful, long knitted cardigan, all for under $100. Score!

Saturday, we had a little family Christmas photo shoot and after a lot of sweat (me) and tears (Rina), everybody was dressed nice and ready to hit the road to go get our pictures taken. Came back home and celebrated the girls’ birthdays (they were born on the same day, 2 years apart. Rina turned 3 and Béa turned 1) until bedtime. I don’t think BeZU had any idea of what was going on, but she sure enjoyed the cake! Rina, on the other hand, was totally into it and had so much fun opening her presents and playing with her new toys!

Sunday, we had pancakes at home and decided to see if we could get the girls’ picture with Santa. After waiting for about 45 mins, it was our turn. At first, Rina wanted nothing to do with the bearded man and I wasn’t about to force her to do it, so I plopped Béa on him and they took a few pictures. After a few minutes, she was starting to get upset so I picked her up and reviewed the pictures with the photographer. While doing so, Santa managed to bribe Rina with some tummies and I took advantage of this by plopping Béa back on his lap and took the typical Christmas picture: Rina looks traumatized (in a deer stuck in headlights kinda way) and Béa is crying at the top of her lungs! A wonderful holiday tradition has thus begun! I’m supposed to go pick up the picture later today, I might postpone it until tomorrow.

Both girls now have a cold, so it was another short night before Crossfit this morning:

I managed to do all my back squats at 85#, but I was struggling on the 3rd rep of each set. I need to make sure I don’t go out of the squat “stripper-style” when it gets hard. The husband asked me over the weekend which lifting shoes I wanted, so I think I will get some for Christmas! 🙂 I’m sure it would help with my squats as I start going heavier.

I had done the WOD previously (back in September) and I was paired up with a young pup which whom I couldn’t keep up with. I think today was a more accurate time as I was paired up with Gorgeous Hair (aka Jumana). I know I slowed her down with my wall balls, but it wasn’t so bad since we finished with a time of 18:39 (17:27 back in September). I just wish I could increase the weight on the wall balls, but they truly are my nemeses. I did manage to do FG with 20x 10# for every rep.

I will leave you with a  few pics of Rina and Béa on their birthdays!

My Hands Hurt!

Finally! I went to bed around 2230 last night and after a small meltdown from Béatrice at 2330, I slept right through until 0450 this morning. Sleep is a beautiful thing! 🙂 Speaking of sleep, I am IN LOVE with my pillow:

I bought mine a little over a year ago and I look forward to resting my head on that pillow EVERY. SINGLE. NIGHT! Well worth the investment. I also bought one for Rina a month about 2 months ago and she’s still adjusting to sleeping with a pillow. I have to admit though, I don’t use the cover my pillow came with, I just modified our own pillow covers with a few stitches on the sewing machine and it works perfectly! 😉

This morning’s WOD:

Captain Coach Kirk was filling in for Coach Caleb (who is away on holidays) this morning. It was nice to have him coach me again (he was my coach for the OnRamp class). Why is the Power Snatch + OH Squat so freakin’ hard? I consider myself pretty good at squatting (hehe!), but this was such a struggle! Here are my reps:

40#-45#-Failed 50# so I scaled back to 45#-45#-45#

I actually fell on my butt attempting the 50#. I felt horrible because I dropped the bar too and it didn’t have a big plate on it, just the little ones. It was the bar or my back, so I chose to protect my back and let go of the bar. I guess it’s another goal to work up to!

For the WOD, we had done this one back in September and my time was 6:35, but I had only done 4 rounds of 12 wall ball (10#) and 8 pull ups with green band.

Today I did the FG with 4 rounds of 12 wall ball (14#) and 10 pull-ups (green and purple band) and I finished in 8:48. I was slower today, but I increased my weights and reps, so I’ll take it! Progress is progress, even if it feels like regressing sometimes!

I came back home and my hands were BURNING from the pull-ups! I have some calluses, but for some reason, they were on fire when I came back home. Maybe it’s because I forgot to chalk up before the WOD? I’ll just moisturize them today.

Since Rina didn’t have her ballet classes today, I was able to book a haircut appointment and I’m very pleased with the result. I got some layers done so my curls are just a little crazier than usual, but I love it! 😉
